Building a new extension

We loved our house from the first time we went through, but it really didn't have enough living space. We have worked on improving the layout of the home and increasing the living area of the home to create a modern and more pleasant layout to the home. We are really proud of how the job has turned out and we wanted to share some of the details of how the extension and layout changes where designed and constructed. This blog has some of the photos of our extension as well as tips that we have learnt along the journey,.

What You Should Know About Roof Trusses

Construction & Contractors Blog

When building a home and putting on a new roof, a truss is often used. If you are having your home custom-built and want an angled roof, you might be considering whether a truss is a good option. With a roof truss, it uses pieces of timber to create a structure that supports an angled roof and keeps it from collapsing. Here are some things to know about roof trusses.

Trusses Are Often More Convenient

First of all, you might wonder why people use trusses in the first place. These are an alternative to traditional roof framing. The reason contractors often like trusses isn't just in the effective support they provide, but because they are often designed by engineers. The contractor can use an engineer-approved truss design, select the timber, and then have it constructed quickly and easily. There are even prefabricated trusses to purchase that simply need to be attached to the home before installing the roof. This severely cuts down on manpower when building a home or making renovations.

You Can Save Money

Having a roof truss installed instead of a regular stick roof frame can also save you money. The reason is because the standard timber lumber used for trusses tends to be less expensive than the longer lumber that needs to be custom-cut for a stick roof. You are also going to save money in labour costs, since installing a truss is often less time-consuming and less difficult than a standard roofing frame.

There Are Many Types

While a lot of roof trusses have the typical triangular shape, there is not just one type of truss. There are actually many different sizes and styles, depending on what your home's needs are. For example, there is a dropped chord truss, which has two elements, including a chord truss and a conventional truss. This helps to reduce possible ceiling or wall damage. Then there is the raised heel truss, a very popular design to use. It offers a raised lower portion, allowing more room in the attic. Some of the other types of timber roof trusses include the scissor truss, Pratt top chord truss, bottom chord truss, and parallel chord truss.

You Can Choose the Timber

You will also be able to get a custom timber truss based on the type of timber you would like to be used. It can be the same timber used for your home's structure, such as yellow pine or red cedar. Seasoned fir is another popular timber for trusses. The region you live might also determine which type of timber is going to work best for you.
